Each day, Monday to Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., nine doctoral students gathered in the Center for Excellence in Writing and felt what it was like to devote an uninterrupted time to writing their dissertations. Some were just starting to write; others were revising. Others were finishing.
UGS screened applicants and admitted those who qualified. The dissertators met briefly each day with faculty from the CEW who acted as mentors; each day they reported on their goals for the day and the week.
We plan to offer additional retreats after fall semester 2012 and after spring semester 2013.
Dissertators working on granites from the Mariana Trench and on large undersea grazers and their tiger shark predators.
