Interested in bringing your draft to the Center for Excellence in Writing? Make an appointment as early in the writing process as you can. Before arriving for your appointment, make sure you have the assignment sheet and any other supporting materials such as grading criteria, grading rubric, previous drafts with instructor comments, etc. Also, bring any questions you may have about those drafts. The more information you bring to your consultant, the more successful your session will be.

If you are having difficulty getting started, we can help you brainstorm and gather ideas. We work with you in all stages of the writing process: prewriting, drafting, revision, presentation. You stay in control of your paper by arriving to the consultation with specific questions or concerns and being prepared to think critically about your writing.

  • How to Sign Up

Use our Online Scheduler to sign up for a 45-minute appointment.

    1. If you have not used the system before, follow the prompts to register first.
    2. Log in and choose the appropriate campus schedule — MMC, BBC or Engineering — or the online session schedule. For more information about online sessions, see Online TutoringBe sure to choose the correct schedule for the current semester.
    3. You will see this week's schedule. Choose a day and available time (available times are shown in white). If you would like to schedule with a particular consultant, you can look for their available time slots. See Staff for the list of consultants.
Scheduling limits: Because of limited resources, if you are an undergraduate student, you may schedule only one appointment at a time. Once you complete that appointment, you may schedule another one. However, if you schedule more than one at a time, your other appointments will be canceled. Graduate students may schedule two appointments at a time. After the completion of the second appointment, grad students may schedule up to two more. Any additional appointments will be canceled.
Graduate students: You may schedule your consultation with one of our graduate consultants (Corey, Shelly, and Tricia). If you are an engineering grad student, you may schedule an appointment with Corey, who also tutors at the Engineering Campus.
    4. Click on the white block to schedule an appointment. A new window will open. Fill in ALL of the required information. Click "Save Appointment."
    5. You will receive an email confirming the appointment and instructions for changing or deleting the appointment. Please remember to cancel any appointment you are unable to attend. If you fail to show up for an appointment (and you have not canceled), you will be allowed one more opportunity to schedule an appointment. If you fail to show up a second time, you will not be able to schedule additional appointments unless you meet with the director.
  • Your Session

Your writing consultant will consider global issues first. For example, the consultant will make sure you have a strong thesis statement or that the thesis is effectively supported before helping you with such concerns as grammar and usage. The reason global issues are considered before local ones is that if your thesis or supporting evidence is weak and needs to be improved, changes in grammar or usage will not make your paper stronger.

The consultants at the Center for Excellence in Writing will not edit or proofread your papers for you. They will not do the thinking or the writing for you. Instead, their goal is to teach you to critically think about your paper so that you can become a strong writer. You always remain in control of your writing during the session.

Following your session, you'll be asked to complete a brief evaluation.

  • Graduate Students

The Center for Excellence in Writing welcomes graduate students in all disciplines to take advantage of our individual consultations and our workshops. Our graduate consultants have personal and professional experience working on longer sustained writing projects. We offer master’s and doctoral candidates completing theses and dissertations the opportunity to schedule weekly or bi-weekly appointments with the same consultant to build continuity. These frequent consultations can help you meet your goals for completing your project.

We also have a space for graduate students working on group projects. Meet your group members at the Center to work together as a group, or schedule an appointment with a graduate consultant who will help guide your group through its project.
